Other perspectives regarding invasive species

  • Environmental advocates supports the preservation of native species, vouching for funding for prevention, and public education to prevent new species from entering the islands.

  • From an agricultural standpoint strict regulations could slow trade or impose additional costs on farms. It requires a balanced approach that protects crops but also consider economic needs.

  • Cultural leaders and Native Hawaiian practitioners claim that eradicating invasive species is essential to protect sacred plants, cultural landscapes, and traditional practices.

Final Thoughts

Hawai‘i’s past helps explain the present because centuries of Western contact, and trade introduced invasive species that interfered with the native ecosystem. This history teaches us that many environmental challenges today we face are the result of human activity. As a citizen, I can make a difference by providing education to the community and raise awareness of the predicament the Hawaii ecosystem face.
